According to the Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó'Snodaigh Shatter and the Israeli ambassador to Ireland had exposed the Oireachtas committee on Foreign Affairs to "propaganda, twisted logic and half truths" which Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi propaganda minister, would have been proud of. Shatter clashed verbally with Professor Ilan Pappé, Professor of History who is an honest Jew at the University of Exeter, accusing Pappé of biased scholarship and historical inaccuracies. This means that Shatter lied.

The report said the crimes of Father David Pearce, jailed for a catalogue of abuse against five boys over a period of 36 years, illustrate how ‘St Benedict's rule of love and forgiveness appears to have overshadowed responsibility for children's welfare’. Pearce, referred to as the ‘devil in a dog collar’, was jailed in October 2009.

The priest remained in ministry, working at three archdiocesan high schools and serving as assistant superintendent of Catholic schools through 2004. Confronted after a man complained to the archdiocese in 1992, the priest admitted to the "sin" of masturbation and said he had read up on that subject because so many people were mentioning it in the confessional.

It now seems that the onus will be placed on the taxpayer to stump up more than the 50 percent originally planned.

Quinn is trying to get the orders to hand over deeds of schools and other property assets to redress the cash shortfall, but many of the properties are now owned by trusts and not directly by the orders.

Cardinal To Be Sacked For Failing To Sort Paedophile Priests [  7 May 2012 ]

Children in institutional care, regardless of religious affiliation, in the Netherlands were at substantial risk of being abused during the period, the molestation rate – 20% – being twice that of elsewhere. The investigation led by Wim Deetman concluded that several tens of thousands of children had suffered sexual molestation.

With the Catholic church embroiled in child abuse scandals from Ireland to Austria and lay Catholics mobilizing against the Vatican for root-and-branch reform of canon law to end celibacy in the priesthood and facilitate female ordination, the Dutch report was the latest damning verdict of serial abuse accompanied by persistent cover-ups.
